Another TV bonus?

Call me a cynic, but it was interesting that only a few days after Kevin Rudd announced that taxpayers would get a $950 stimulus package bonus the K-mart catalogue in our mailbox was advertising a wide-screen plasma TV for $949 (page 16).

It’s obvious: Kevin Rudd saw that catalogue before it was printed and set the package to match the TV price. As an aside, despite all the talk of plasma TVs, I don’t know a single person who has or is planning to buy one (and that includes some bogans I know) most people are planning to pay off their credit cards. (Also the bogans I know have already got the giant plasma TV on an interest free loan)

    It’s not even HD!

That’s not the message I should be taking, is it?

Good one, Matt. I’m inclined to think that a lot of the plasma TV (baby/stimulus package/tax) bonus thing is a media beatup to push particular political and ideological viewpoints.

Wendy, nice to know I’m not alone being cynical over this one.

I don’t have a credit card. Am I allowed to buy a giant television?

Only if it’s made in Australia. Otherwise we’re stimulating China’s (or somewhere else’s) economy, aren’t we?

but isn’t China’s economy what we’re all depending on…and if it’s on the up then ours will be too?

i have a very poor grasp of economics as you probably tell!

No, I think Wendy that you’ve grasped precisely what they’ve been telling us repeatedly for years.

Package has passed – the stimulus cheque will be $50 less than promised. KMart had better discount that plasma a bit more!

(Seriously though, it’s not even HD! Bah.)

Cynicism, realism – I was of the same mind-set! I was also amused at how many people were calling talkback radio and carrying on about how this talk of spending ‘stimulus package’ dosh on consumables and frivolity isn’t going to feed the poor… (ummm, cos it isn’t meant to?)
